Canary Islands Cleanup La Palma – July 24, 2022

After the volcano had erupted last fall forcing us to leave in a frenzy, we moved our EU office back to the beautiful island of La Palma and are now back on track with local ocean and beach cleanups in collaboration with Ambiente Europeo.

Thanks to the generous support from local shops, marine suppliers, and, above all, the great team at Puerto Tazacorte, we are organizing a cleanup event for two days right under the volcano on the west coast of La Palma.

Two beaches will be cleaned. One of them is only accessible by boat, kayak, or on foot down a steep trail from the cliffs of Tazacorte, which may be a reason why many beach visitors don’t take their trash home and leave it on the beach.

Here are the cleanup dates:

July 24, 2022 between 6 and 9 PM Playa de Puerto Tazacorte – walk right to the beach behind the port wall. Meet at the giant LOVE sign at entrance.

July 25, 2022 between 10 AM and 3 PM Playa de Pozo – walk down from Pueblo Tazacorte or come by boat, kayak, or SUP board.

Cleaners, please bring: sombrero (hat), beach shoes or flipflops (volcanic sand is very hot!), water (avoid plastic), gloves and grabbers if you have.

We’ll provide zamuros, bags, buckets for cigarette butts, forks, a fishing kayak, swim vests.

On Sunday, we’ll anchor SV Amaral close to the beach to haul out the trash from the dinghy.

There will be amazing prizes to win for everyone coming out to help:

  • A trip for 2 on the excursion boat Nemo from Nemo La Palma. Thanks, Aitor and Nieve, for this generous donation!
  • An educational trip with microplastic sampling and dolphin watching onboard SV Amaral for one person with an overnight stay on board
  • Reduced boat rental with Náutica Tazacorte
  • Ice cream from Heladeria Drago (nam, nam)
  • Shopping discount at Naturseifen Maday in Los LLanos

A big Thank You goes out to the team of Puerto Tazacorte for providing WiFi, postal service, easy access to parking, and support for non-profit organizations. Thanks also to Finca Montemero for collaborating on ocean plastic recycling, helping us with their marine conservation expertise and providing flags and banners for the boat!
